Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate/SLES/AES
Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES), also known as AES, is a versatile surfactant with widespread applications. You will commonly find it in personal care products like shampoos and shower gels, as well as in household cleaners such as laundry and dishwashing liquids. Furthermore, industries including textiles, leather, and petroleum utilize it for its lubricating and cleaning properties.
Other names include: Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulphonate, Sodium lauryl polyoxyethylene ether sulfate, and specific variants like SODIUM LAURETH-5 SULFATE. Its general CAS Number is 68585-34-2.
Typical Appearance: Ranges from a white or light yellow gel-like paste to a colorless or light yellow liquid.
Primary Applications: Shampoo, body wash, hand sanitizer, and face wash.
Purity: 70% and 28%
Both SLES 70% and SLES 28% offer excellent detergency, emulsification, foaming, and hard water resistance, while also causing low irritation to skin and eyes. However, the 70% version dissolves more easily and provides superior thickening power, making it ideal for high-potency formulations. Consequently, manufacturers often use SLES 70% as a primary surfactant. In contrast, SLES 28% is better suited for formulations where adjusting viscosity or maintaining transparency is a priority.
